Steven Hoskins Risk Management 101— New E-Learning Tools Steve was born and reared in Idaho potato country. He served a mission in Norway. He obtained a degree in International Relations from BYU and later earned a law degree from University of Idaho. Steve came to work for the LDS Church in 2007 to establish the global enterprise risk management function for church operations. He joined Church Risk Management at the beginning of 2010. He is married with 6 children. He loves the Scouting movement and has been instrumental in leading the safety efforts of the Trapper Trails Council.
Ben Gerlach Recognizing the Hazards— Examples of Unsafe Conditions Ben is the Manager of Safety, Health and Environmental for LDS temples worldwide. He has been employed by the Church since July 2007. Ben has worked as a safety professional for 21 years. His previous experience includes working as a senior safety specialist for FedEx’s Great Basin District and as a senior safety and loss prevention representative at the Workers Compensation Fund of Utah (WCF). Ben received a master of public health degree (MPH) in safety and ergonomics from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1998 and the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation in 2001. He holds an associate in risk management (ARM) designation and completed his MFD-FM certification in 2010. Ben is an active member of the American Society of Safety. He is married and has four children and eight grandchildren.
Kent Wise The Human Element and the Accident Chain of Events&mdash How to Do the Impossible with the Garden Variety Soul Kent is the lead technician in the LDS Church Life Safety Shop. With over 26 years of experience in the fire alarm and life safety industry, he communicates safety topics in ways that captivate and entertain. Some may remember his presentation in the 2005 Safety Conference on “The Safety Fly,” where he likened safety to fly fishing. His warped sense of humor is still active today and promises to make you laugh and leave with a firmer resolve to make a difference in safety.
John Murphy & Brandon Rohner The Rains Came Down and the Floods Came Up— What to Do When Facing a Water Loss John is the husband of Kristen Murphy and the father of four children, ranging in age from 7 to 2 years old. He received a bachelor’s degree in business management from Western Governors University and has been a Church employee for the past seven years. John currently serves as a property damage claims analyst in the Risk Management Division. He is also a certified IICRC Water Restoration Technician.
Nathan Spencer The Nitty Gritty of Incident Investigations from the Front Lines Nate has been working as a safety, health and environmental professional for the Materials Management Department for the last 10 years. He received a bachelor’s degree in the industrial hygiene program at Utah State University. He and his wife Jodi are the happy parents of three children. The Spencer family enjoys camping, canoeing and fishing together. They also like to eat fish.
Ron Carlson Web Incident Reporting and Safety Technology Solutions on Steroids Ron attended LDS Business College and earned a BS in business administration from Utah State University, later earning his MS in HR management. He served in the Florida Jacksonville Mission. Ron is manager of the Risk Management Information System (RMIS) and Process Improvement and has spent the past 14 years working in the Church Risk Management Division. Throughout his 20 years of Church employment, Ron has participated on multiple process reengineering and improvement projects. He looks for opportunities to utilize computer technology to improve communication and bring efficiencies to business processes. Ron also looks for ways to use computer technology to keep things simple and make a difference. When he is not doing that, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, playing the saxophone, or reading a good book.

Bill Abbott The Who’s, What’s and Why’s of Training Operators of Powered Industrial Trucks and Aerial Lifts Bill has worked for the LDS Church for over 23 years. He spent his first 20 years with the Physical Facilities Department, in the Headquarters Facilities Division. Among his other training and certifications, Bill is a licensed plumber and an instructor at Salt Lake Community College. In November 2008 he transferred to the Materials Management Department and currently works at Beehive Clothing Mills as safety coordinator. He has spent the last 12 years working in safety-related positions. Bill has a knack for creating unique training sessions that invite participation. He is married and has one daughter.

Travis Hannan Seismic Gas Shut-off Valves—How they work and how they can protect your building. Travis was named after Travis Air Force Base, where his dad spent time learning and teaching pilots to fly jets during the Vietnam war. His parents moved to Utah when his dad started working for Delta Airlines. He attended Skyline High School and went on to get a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Utah. Travis and his wife have two boys and live in Sandy. She received her graduate degree from BYU and currently works in the counseling center of the Wilkinson Student Center as one of several clinical psychologists. Travis was a consultant and loss prevention engineer with FM Global for seven years. He services many Church properties, including area temples and the BYU–Provo and BYU–Idaho campuses.
Mike Taylor Indoor Air Quality— Improving Our Surroundings Mike Taylor is the global manager for safety, health and environment for the Church Risk Management Division. Mike has an MS in public health with an industrial hygiene major from the University of Utah. He is a certified industrial hygienist. Mike has worked for the Church since 1991. He has also worked in industry and as a consultant.
