STARTALK Summer Arabic Language Camp for High School Students

Arabic Mosque

Tentative dates for the program are July 9 to July 28, 2012. There is only ONE session planned this year, but it will accommodate the same number of students as two sessions in the past. Please continue to check the website for updates.

Applications will be online and available beginning in the first few months of 2012.

What is STARTALK?

Brigham Young University’s STARTALK Arabic 2012 will offer two intensive three-and-a-half-week Arabic language learning experiences for mature, highly motivated high school students, as well as a shorter, non-residential experience for local students wishing to get a taste of our camps—details to be posted soon. Through formal classroom instruction, fun hands-on activities, and creative cultural experiences, students build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Arabic.

BYU Arabic STARTALK’s exciting student-centered curriculum emphasizes active learning. Activities include:

  1. Daily outdoor recreational activities centered around the language
  2. Daily cultural activities that feature Middle Eastern dance, art, cooking, etc.
  3. Weekly fieldtrips to Middle Eastern restaurants and mosques
  4. Weekly “celebrations” that include a Ramadan meal, etc.

Parents are invited to attend the culminating Celebration Banquet which celebrates the student’s achievements. Every year participants give the BYU Arabic STARTALK program high marks for learning, fun, and friendship.

All STARTALK classes are taught by experienced faculty. Tutorial and review sessions are offered daily. Students live in housing provided through BYU Housing. Arabic and English speaking resident facilitators supervise evening and weekend activities. Meals are provided by BYU Food Services.

Students agree to abide by the BYU Honor Code while participating in the BYU Arabic STARTALK camp.

Tuition:

Program Fees are typically around $1,000 for all costs, including textbooks. High school credit for the course is included in the cost. If students want to receive university credit, it is typically $200–300. Each session usually includes a lower and higher level class, dependent on previous experience. Limited financial aid is available after acceptance to the program.

Why Learn Arabic?

  • It’s Useful. Arabic is one of the five official languages of the United Nations, yet few Americans know it. Even limited knowledge of Arabic can open doors in communicating with Muslims the world over (of which there are approximately one billion).
  • It’s Fun. As an active learner, you’ll soon be talking and experiencing Arab culture. STARTALK will expand your worldview.
  • It’s Impressive. When you learn Arabic, you’ll find that friends, potential employers, and others will respect your newfound talents. Arabic opens up new opportunities for anyone that learns it.
  • It’s Growing. National and state governments support Arabic language programs.

Don’t miss this amazing cultural experience!
