Faculty: April D. Clayton
Enrollment is limited to 16 flutists
Flutists will have the opportunity to work with chamber ensembles and perform with a large ensemble, band or orchestra. These will include ensembles with other flutists or with other chamber wind groups, including trios, quartets, etc.
Skills needed include the ability to play scales in eighth notes (quarter = 144) in keys containing up to five flats, using a range from low D up to the G above high C.
Instrumentalists should additionally be able to sight-read in 3/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, and 9/8.
In preparation for ensemble auditions, flutists should prepare two contrasting solos, and additionally be prepared with any of the above scale and sight-reading requirements.
Each flutist will attend several flute sectionals and master classes. These classes will focus on the refinement of flute performance, including topics such as intonation, embouchure, style, finger technique, tone production, and articulation. Interested flutists are encouraged to bring their piccolos in order to discuss and work on the challenges specific to this instrument
