Registration and Enrollment

Registration

Anyone can register for classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center provided that they have

  • earned a high school diploma or a GED,
  • completed their Clearance to Register form and received their ecclesiastical endorsement, and
  • agreed to abide by the Honor Code as published on the BYU Salt Lake Center Web site and been cleared to register.

Admitted BYU day continuing students may register for BYU Salt Lake Center classes as they do for regular on‐campus classes.

Once a student registers for classes, he/she is officially enrolled and committed to attend.

Registering under false pretenses will cause students to forfeit tuition and fees, and they will receive no credit for class work completed.

Nonadmitted Students

For nonadmitted students, taking classes at the center does not constitute admission to Brigham Young University, does not allow registration for on‐campus classes, nor does it provide any advantage over other applicants in the admission process. If nonadmitted students are later admitted officially to Brigham Young University, their credits count toward graduation requirements in the same way any other university course credits do.

The credits earned at the BYU Salt Lake Center may be transferred to other universities and colleges. For more information, contact the admission office at the selected university or college.

Enrollment as a non-admitted student does not entitle the student to federal financial aid,  or use of the physical education facility (on the main campus in Provo) privileges.

Admitted BYU Students

Students admitted to Brigham Young University may register for any combination of credit hours on both the main campus in Provo and the BYU Salt Lake Center (up to 18 hours per semester or 9 hours per term). BYU Salt Lake Center classes are listed in the regular BYU class schedules. Students may register for these classes in the same way they register for on‐campus classes.

Admitted students to Brigham Young University are required to enroll in at least one class each major semester (fall and winter) in order to maintain their admitted status. Enrollment at either BYU or the BYU Salt Lake Center will meet this requirement. If you have not met this enrollment requirement and have not received an approved deferment, you will need to reapply for admission.

Residence Credit

At least 30 credit hours must be earned in residence on the BYU campus in Provo as an admitted day student to qualify for a baccalaureate degree.

Within each major department there is also a residency requirement. The minimum requirement is 10 hours in Provo, but varies significantly across individual departments and majors. Check with the academic advisor in room 329 for more details.

BYU Salt Lake Center credits do not count toward the residency requirement.

International Students

International students must comply with BYU admission requirements prior to taking classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center. Please contact the BYU International Services Office at 801‐422‐2695.

High School Concurrent Enrollment

As a high school student, you may enroll under certain circumstances for credit courses after your junior year. For further information, contact the BYU Admissions Counseling Office at 801‐422‐2500.

How to Register (Nonadmitted Students)

Step 1: Obtain Clearance

Clearance to Register/Ecclesiastical Endorsement forms may be picked up from the BYU Salt Lake Center, mailed upon request, or accessed and printed from the BYU Salt Lake Center home page (http://ce.byu.edu/sl) on the Internet.

When the BYU Salt Lake Center has received and approved the Clearance to Register/Ecclesiastical Endorsement forms, access will be given to the registration system. Access to registration is normally available to you after two business days from the time all clearance information has been submitted. If there are questions regarding clearance information, the BYU Salt Lake Center will contact the student.

Step 2: Work Out Your Schedule

Course information can be found at the BYU Salt Lake Center home page or on the Brigham Young University home page (http://saas.byu.edu/classSchedule/). We suggest that you write down all the information for the classes you desire to take and work out a schedule before using the registration system.

Step 3: Register for Classes

Once you have obtained clearance, you may register for classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center by using the AIM registration screens on BYU’s Web site.

Internet access is available at the BYU Salt Lake Center for those who do not have Internet access available at home.

Instructions for BYU Online Class Registration

AIM (Academic Information Management) is BYU’s online student information management system. To register for classes, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the BYU home page (http://home.byu.edu).
  2. Click on the “Route Y” link.
  3. Enter your Net ID and password. Click the arrow button.

If you do not know your Net ID, click on the link labeled “Forgot Net ID or Password.” Input the requested information and click the Search button. If you still experience problems entering Route Y with your Net ID or password, contact the Office of Information Technology in Provo at 801‐422‐4000 (open 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays and Fridays mountain time).

  1. Click on the “School” link and then the “AIM” link.
  2. Click on “MyMAP.”
  3. Click on “Register.” This will bring up a “General Student Information” screen which displays your academic standing, financial holds, registration status, etc. It will list the semesters and terms available for registration.
  4. Click on the “+” sign to the left of the listed semester or term for which you would like to register.
  5. Click on “Add Classes.”
  6. Click the down arrow in the Select Teaching Area window to select the desired academic department. Then click “Go.”
  7. Click the down arrow in the Select Course window and select the desired course. Click “Go.”
  8. Available sections for the selected class will be listed. Click on the A for the section you desire. Note that all BYU Salt Lake Center classes are designated as “Salt Lake” under the Sec. Type column. The course will now be listed on the “General Student Information Screen.”
  9. Repeat steps 8 through 11 for each class for which you want to register.
  10. Click on the Log Out button at the top of the page when you are finished.

Class Changes

The BYU Salt Lake Center reserves the right to discontinue, postpone, or combine classes and change instructors. If it is necessary for the center to cancel a class, you will receive a full refund or be able to transfer to another class.

Adding, Dropping, and Withdrawing

Adding:

Classes may be added using MyMAP by following these steps:

1. Log into Route Y using your Net ID and password or click here to enter MyMAP and skip step 2. If you have forgotten your Net ID or password, click here.

2. Select the School tab and click the MyMAP link or type MyMAP in the Quick URL box and click the orange arrow box.

3. Click the Register tab

To add classes you have already planned using MyMAP, follow the instructions in this column.

To add classes you have not planned using MyMAP, follow the instructions in this column

4a. Scroll down to the planned courses section and find the semester/term you wish to add classes for.

4b. Find the semester/term you wish to add classes for and click the Add Classes button.

5a. Click Add next to each course you wish to register for.

5b. Select the teaching area and course you wish to add.

6. Select the section you wish to add. Choose an available section that fits your schedule. Available sections have an "A" in the left column. Full class are denoted by a dash(-). If the section you want to add is already full, keep checking back every few days. There is a chance that a student already in that class will drop it before classes start. Also pay attention to prerequisites and recommendations listed at the top of the screen. Also pay attention to the Notes column for specific instructions for individual sections.

Adding Classes Using a Permission-to-add Code:

Some classes may require a permission-to-add code for registration. To add a class that requires a permission-to-add code, contact the instructor/department and obtain a permission-to-add code. Login to Route Y and select MyMAP. In MyMAP, select the Register Tab. Find the desired semester and click the Add Classes button. Select the teaching area and course you wish to add. In the left hand column, click the "P" for the class you are adding. A pop-up box will appear where you may enter the permission-to-add code (see Figure below). Enter the permission-to-add code and click "continue". In the resulting window, select "OK" to verify the transaction. If you have a registration hold, you will not be able to use the permission-to-add code until you clear all holds.

Dropping:

Classes may be dropped online using MyMAP at no cost until the add/drop deadline. To drop a class, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Route Y using your Net ID and password or click here to enter MyMAP directly and skip step 2. If you have forgotten your Net ID or password, click here.
  2. Select the School tab and click the MyMAP link or type MyMAP in the Quick URL box and click the orange arrow box.
  3. Click the Register tab.
  4. Find the semester/term for which you wish to drop classes.
  5. Click Drop next to the class you wish to drop.
  6. A window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to drop that class. Click OK to drop the class.

Note: If you are dropping all your classes, see next section.

Withdrawing From Classes Between the Add/Drop Deadline and the Withdraw Deadline:

Students may withdraw from classes until the withdraw deadline. When withdrawing from a class, a $10 fee will be charged and a "W" will be posted to the student's transcript.

The university reserves the right to assign a failing grade for academic dishonesty reasons even if the student is able to withdraw him/herself from the class before the failing grade has been assigned.

Generally, W's do not affect a student unless the student has a number of them and is applying to graduate school. The graduate school may wonder why the student repeatedly signs up for courses and then drops them after the deadline.

To withdraw from a class, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Route Y using your Net ID and password or click here to enter MyMAP directly and skip step 2. If you have forgotten your Net ID or password, click here.
  2. Select the School tab and click the MyMAP link or type MyMAP in the Quick URL box and click the orange arrow box.
  3. Click the Register tab.
  4. Find the semester/term for which you wish to drop classes.
  5. Click Drop next to the class you wish to drop.
  6. A window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to drop that class. Click OK to drop the class.

Discontinuance:

Discontinuance, official withdrawal from all classes by a student admitted to BYU, must be done through the Discontinuance Office on the main campus in Provo (801‐422‐7705). Click here to see the official Dicontinuance Instructions for BYU.

Nonadmitted students who are taking classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center and wish to withdraw from all of them should contact the BYU Salt Lake Center (801‐933‐9400).
